>>>Dragalevtzi monastery lies at the foothills of the Vitosha Mountain, 3 km off the village of Dragalevtzi. It dates back to the years of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom. It was erected by Tzar Ivan Alexander and was protected by Tzar Ivan Shishman.

>>>The Bulgarian Sveti Ivan Rilski (St. John of Rila) founds Rila Monastery back in the 10th century. It is situated in a deep gorge in the heart of the majestic Rila Mountain. The distance from Sofia is 120 km. For centuries this monastery played an extraordinary role in the Bulgarian history and spiritual growth. Rila Monastery is the largest monument of architecture and arts in Bulgaria.

>>>The smallest town in Bulgaria Melnik is situated in the southwest part of the country, close to the Greek border. Melnik is an architectural reserve. The nature around Melnik is truly amazing. Impressive and austerely splendid, the Melnik pyramids rank among the most remarkable natural phenomena in Bulgaria

>>>Rozhen Monastery has existed since the Second Bulgarian Kingdom in the Middle Ages. It is situated near the ancient town of Melnik in the southwest part of the country, close to the Greek border. The architecture of the monastery is very impressive. The church in its yard, built in 1600, was renewed and painted in the 18th century. It contains a wealth of splendid stained glass, openwork woodcarvings and old icons.

>>>Plovdiv is an industrial city, known for its annual international trade fair. However, it is also a rich cultural center, because it was a Roman provincial capital. In summer plays are still performed in the well-preserved remains of a Roman amphitheater. The Plovdiv Archeological Museums contains the Panagyuriste gold treasure (4th. century B.C.), a set of nine exquisitely shaped Thracian vessels - rhytons, amphoras and a phial - all embossed with mythological scenes.

>>>It is also the natural gateway to the magnificent Rhodopes Mountains and the mountain resort.

>>>Bachkovski Monastery was founded in 1083 A.D. by brothers Grigorii and Abbassi Bakouriani, Georgians by nationality. The Turks destroyed it in the 15th century. The monastery was restored at the beginning of the 17th century.

>>>Altogether, this is one of the most special parts of Bulgaria's more recent history.

>>>The Church of the Archangels was built in the 12th century. The church of the Assumption of Our Lady was built in 1604 at the same time as the former refectory. The Cemetery Chapel (see photo below) is the only remaining building from the 11th century.

>>>The paintings in the Church of St. Nicholai are by Zahari Zograph (1840). Other paintings by Zahari Zograph are those under the Church of the Archangels.
>>>The Bachkovski Monastery library preserves many valuable manuscripts and church artifacts.

>>>Preobrazhenie Monastery dates back to the Second Bulgarian Kingdom. It is located amidst a gorgeous lime-tree forest, under the vertical jagged cliffs in the ravine of the Yantra River, some 6-km north from Veliko Tarnovo. It was restored to its present-day shape in 1825. The peerless master Kolyo Ficheto completed the church. The Preobrazhenie church is a striking masterpiece of both architecture and iconography.
